One of our aims for 2011 was to get some open water swimming going in our club with the view that we could get some entering the  East Midlands Open Water Championship in July.

We had 3 entries to that competition, but we had many many come to practice/train on Thursdays nights from May-July, so we were successful, but we're not done yet! Hopefyully in 2012 we'll be able to repeat this and maybe get a few more entering the actual competition!

Open Water Swimming is fundamentally different to swimming in a pool:

  •  Uninterrupted Swimming (No Turns)
  •     No Blue line! You have to keep checking for a point of reference so you don't go off track
  •     Longer Distances (Races tend to be 1500m or above)
  •     Colder Water (depends on the time of year, in summer Bosworth is usually 18-22?C compared to 28-29? in a public pool.

The triathlon club run sessions at Bosworth water that begin in the Spring time on a Thursday evening at around 6:00 and on Saturday mornings also which we are allowed to gatecrash!

Initially in the season a Wet Suit may be recommended because the water is that bit cooler. However the Open Water championships only allow ordinary Jammers, but by that point the water will be a into the 20's.

We would welcome anybody that is in the Diddy Squad, Senior Session or Masters session to come and speak to Andy Mackay or John Edwards who will make note of your name and give you all the information as and when!

We would really appreciate support from parents, we need good supervision to make this happen particularly for younger swimmers.
